The Journey of Becoming a Personal Stylist

When I decided personal styling was a career path I wanted to pursue, there were a number of things I wasn’t aware of: the challenges that lay ahead, how much I didn’t know about running a business, how skint I would be, how much I needed to invest in my business, how much I would neglect my family (it doesn’t need to be that way), how much effort it would take, how experience would be the greatest gift, what I would learn from people, how much I liked working with people… I could go on and on. But what I really wasn’t familiar with was the impact my work would have on others. How life changing my work would be.

The Ripple Effect of Personal Styling

From my own personal experiences, I knew that this line of work would have a ripple effect on my client, but I wasn’t quite aware of the life changing experiences most clients would have. It sounds dramatic, I know, but honestly, if you’re a stylist reading this, you’ll know. If you’re not, trust me when I say that you’ll change people’s lives. Especially women. Women who have suffered, women who have beaten themselves up about the way they look, women who get in their own heads, women who don’t understand themselves, women who have had their own life-changing experience, women who have experienced body changes—let’s face it, who hasn’t?

The Power of a Personal Stylist

As a personal stylist, you have the power to change people’s lives. When I say this, it sounds like you need big things to make such changes, but I guarantee that just the smallest gesture will have a big impact on your client’s life.

Entering a Client’s Personal Space

When we enter a client’s wardrobe, we enter their personal space—space that occupies the mind and their emotions. A space that we seldom invite strangers to. You are that stranger—not just the stylist, you’re the life changer, the changemaker, and the confidence giver. Many people consider a personal stylist to be the cat-walking fashionista that’s going to charge you extortionate amounts and throw all of your clothes away. That couldn’t be further from the truth; most stylists I know are down-to-earth empaths with style, have a great ear for listening, and are pretty organised with an awesome creative eye for detail.

Is that you?

You don’t need to be a trend-setter or have a fashion-led history; you don’t need to be a specific age or know the difference between Louboutin and Lacroix. You simply need to be a sound human being, who wants to help people feel proud of who they are.

What’s holding you back?
